How does the process work?

The employer first has to apply for and General Work Permit at the Department of Busi-ness, Enterprise & Innovation which oversees the Employment Permits system. General Employment Permits are the primary vehicle used by the State to attract 3rd country na-tionals for occupations which are experiencing a labour or skills shortage.

The employer must be eligible for the work permit. As with most employment permits the issue of a General Employment Permit is contingent on a job offer from a bona fide em-ployer registered with the Revenue Commissioners and, if applicable, with the Companies Registration Office/Registry of Friendly Societies and is trading in Ireland.

The job must be advertised to see if there are any Irish / European Union’s countries em-ployees that may be able to fill the position if not and on completion of the labour market test the employer can apply for the permit which can take up to 12 weeks.
